Building and owning a custom vehicle is what most of us gearheads strive for. We all do it for different reasons and at various paces. Some may spend half their lives tinkering in the garage on a project while others thrash through the night for a few months to knock out a SEMA build. For one of our freelance photographers, Brandon Burrell, owning a custom vehicle has always been a part of his life. He owned a couple featured vehicles, but back in 2004, he decided to sell what he had and focus on automotive photography. He knew he would one day own another custom vehicle, and never lost sight of that dream, even though life got in the way for a while. During the 2013 SEMA Show he decided it was time to finally build something that was worthy of a magazine feature that could be driven across the country to SEMA. A few phone calls were made and a KEG Media rendering was worked up. Brandon had the ball rolling to build his first custom vehicle in 10 years. He picked up a 2014 Chevrolet Silverado Crew Cab 4WD from a local dealership and proceeded to tear it apart for its transformation. If you’re an avid Truckin magazine reader, then you have seen several aspects of this build throughout the past year in various tech articles, and here is the final product.

After removing all of the badging and installing the Undercover LUX tonneau cover, BedRug and Swing Cases, the truck was taken to Garner’s Stereo Center in Fletcher, North Carolina, for the first big change. Everything but the dash and headliner were stripped out of the interior and the entire cab and all four doors were coated in Memphis Audio MoJo Mat to make the drive a little quieter. A Kenwood DNN-991HD was installed in place of the factory head unit in order to power the huge Memphis Audio M-Class 1,400-watt amp, two sets of 6.5-inch Memphis Audio components and four M-Class pancake 12-inch subs. To ensure the truck would get enough power for the system and all of the LED lights planned for the truck, dual Kinetik REV Series batteries were mounted under the hood. While the stereo was being installed, Mr. Scrape Customs in Sumter, South Carolina, handled the Katzkin leather seat installation and the custom door panel inserts to add a little more color inside. Darkside Window Tinting tinted the glass while the truck was apart as well.

Once the interior was wrapped up, Brandon took the truck for its final and largest transformation. For this, the truck was taken to Rimz One in Mooresville, North Carolina, where Mike Mashburn and his crew did a flawless job transforming the stock-looking truck to a showstopping SEMA vehicle. The first thing they did was install the Smittybilt Defender roof rack and OLB lights on the roof to give the truck a beefier look. Next it was time to pretty much unbolt everything they could from under the truck to make room for the 14-inch 3rd Coast Suspension and Atlas Springs progressive leaf packs in the rear. Fox 2.5 coilovers in the front and 2.0 resi shocks in the rear ensured the truck would ride as smooth as factory. Fabtech uniball upper control arms rounded out the suspension modifications. Most of the suspension and a few other parts were powdercoated a metallic gray to add some contrast to the trucks color scheme, and the entire frame was stripped of the greasy factory under coating and then re-sprayed back a semi-gloss black to really clean up the underside of the truck. For rolling stock, Brandon went with a set of TIS Wheels 22-inch wheels wrapped in a set of 40-inch Nitto Mud Grapplers. Knowing he wouldn’t be happy with a set of black wheels fresh out of the box, Brandon had Rimz One come up with a custom paint pattern for the wheels that would really stand out. They also painted a spare wheel to be mounted in a matching Nitto and put in the bed. To stop this new rolling mass, a set of R1 slotted rotors with performance pads were bolted on, and a custom set of custom MGP Caliper Covers were added for a little more detail. To make getting into this tall truck easier, they also installed a set of AMP Research power steps and some Bed Steps along either rocker.

To make sure the stock motor wouldn’t have any trouble moving all this added weight down the road, an Airaid intake, Doug Thorley shorty headers, and MBRP cat-back exhaust were bolted on before the DiabloSport InTune programmer was added. While the truck was apart, several parts were painted such as the grill, mirrors, several engine covers, a few interior pieces and the Bushwacker pocket flares. A set of Fusion bumpers were also painted and installed along with several more OLB light bars. A Carriage Works billet grille insert, Monster Hook swivel hooks and American Brother Designs painted billet door handles, grille emblem, and custom gas door were also added to finish off that custom look. Back at home, Dustin Maybin from Maybin Concepts fabbed up a custom mount for the Viair Onboard Air system and Kleinn Demon Train Horns to go under the rear of the truck. Brandon then wired up eight OLB cubes under the truck to light up the suspension at night.

Soon after Brandon’s dream truck had become a reality, it was time for its maiden voyage—2,337 miles to Las Vegas for the 2014 SEMA show, where it received plenty of praise. Brandon wants to point out that this decade-long dream of building a SEMA vehicle wouldn’t be possible without the support of everyone involved, especially his girlfriend, Kristin, for playing a huge part in helping him see the outcome before it was even started and his daughter, Sarena, for begging to ride in the truck with all her friends. By SEMA’s end, the truck caught someone’s attention enough that they bought it on the spot. The new owners baby the Silverado the same way Brandon would have and plan to continue with the modifications and make it even more of a crowd stopper. On to the next dream; one that we doubt will take another 10 years to come true.
